Ditch the Plastic-based and Go Plant-based with Twist Loofah Sponge

  • $5.74

Ditch the polyurethane (i.e., plastic) sponges for these plant-based alternative...and when you're done with the sponge, chop it up and toss it in your compost!
Did you know that most sponges are made from plastic material?  Invented by 3M to mimic the look and feel of natural sponges, these things will sit in the landfill for hundreds of years after you throw them out.  But not anymore (queue the dramatic introductory music).  We've been using the sponges for months and they work great. We also chopped one up and threw it in our compost, and it seems to be totally biodegradable.  How cool is that?
The directions suggest tossing the sponge in boiling water when it starts to get cruddy, which we have not tried but in theory would help prolong it's useful life.
All in all, this is a great alternative to plastic sponges and the product does well on our sustainability checklist:
  • As I mentioned, this product diverts waste from the landfill, just chop it up and toss it in the compost when you're done.
  • Although slightly expensive, we have found that the sponges last a long time.

Details: Artificial colors. Plastics. Chemical dyes. They're in your kitchen. Not in the pantry, but over by the sink. Like that neon yellow sponge with the bright green scrub side. We have a feeling that's not exactly natural. Unlike our Twist Loofah Sponge, which shows its true colors: unbleached, undyed white cellulose and tan, scrubby loofah. And it's totally plant based and compostable, just like the food it cleans up after.
