Love the outdoors? Buff's multi-functional headwear is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles and is a great option if you bike, hike, run, jog, walk, or skip in cool weather (so basically everyone outside the tropics).
Buff does well on R&R's Sustainability Checklist (1=Earth is sad, 5= Earth is happy):
Environmental Sustainability: 4 - Made from recycled plastic (made of the equivalent of 2 water bottles), plus Buff gets bonus points for shipping the product with plastic minimal waste and uses 80% recycled paperboard.
Disposal Impact: 2 - Not sure what you do with this at the end of its life, but seems like it will last a long time (see below)
Quality/Price: 4 - An affordable piece of gear that is versatile and after a year of testing, seems very durable.
Social Responsibility: 1 - No info on Buff's website about their commitment to the environment or fellow humans.
Although we have found other companies that we love, I have to say, Buff's headwear is one of my favorite recycled products we've run across.
Being all weather bikers, including in temperatures down to the teens, this product is perfect - cover just your ears on a normal cold day, or when it gets really cold, rearrange to a full face mask. Helmets fit fine while wearing Buff's headwear. They are also reflective to increase visibility during nighttime biking or walking.
Also, if you have kids, you are well aware of children's propensity to go outside in freezing weather wearing minimal clothing (they do it to torture parents, a skill my children have honed to perfection).
Buff to the rescue - kids love these things! Set them up in front of Buff's video showing the 20 different ways you can wear them and your kids will be sporting these things like a pirate one day, train robber the next, hip hop star doo-rag next, etc. Parent to parent tip - buy one per kid or you'll suffer days of "I want to wear it" fights.
Back on the environmental sustainability side, another thing I like about Buff's product is that I think it will require limited washing since you'll be using it in very cold weather, thus less sweat. Buff recommends avoiding the washing machine and cleaning by hand.
Washing recycled fabric, especially in the washer machine, can release microfibers into the environment. You'll notice we don't promote many fashion products made from recycled plastic.
It seems like the jury is still out on what impact these tiny, microscopic pieces of plastic will have on our environment. It seems like a safe bet that loading up the Earth with microscopic pieces of plastic won't improve the functioning of our natural systems!
All in all, Buff headgear is an innovative use of discarded plastic bottles, a great solution for active people during the cooler months of the year, and a clever option to keep the kids from catching pneumonia!
